Wellbeing

At St Joseph’s, we place the wellbeing of every student at the centre of our school community. We are committed to creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment where children can flourish socially, emotionally, and academically.

Our approach to student wellbeing is holistic and proactive. We implement a broad range of programs and practices designed to meet the diverse needs of our students, including social-emotional learning, resilience-building activities, mentoring, peer support initiatives, and targeted pastoral care. These programs equip students with the skills to manage challenges, build confidence, foster positive relationships, and develop a strong sense of self.

Wellbeing at St Joseph’s is embedded across all aspects of school life. Teachers and staff are trained to recognise and respond to individual needs, and we encourage students to take an active role in their own personal growth. Through collaborative efforts with families and the wider school community, we ensure every child feels valued, supported, and empowered.

Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL)

St Joseph’s has been widely recognised as an outstanding Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. We remain firmly committed to the PBL framework, working together as a community to nurture a culture that is safe, supportive, and centred on growth for every student.

What is PBL?

PBL is an evidence-based, school-wide framework designed to improve student outcomes by clearly defining and explicitly teaching expected behaviours. Rather than simply reacting to behaviours, our staff takes a proactive approach to ensure every student understands school expectations. We use data to monitor progress and provide a tiered continuum of support - ranging from universal classroom strategies  to intensive, individualised assistance.

The Impact of PBL

When implemented effectively by our teachers explicitly teaching our school expectations and reinforcing positive behaviours, PBL reclaims instructional time and strengthens the school climate. Benefits include:

  • Enhanced Wellbeing: Improved social-emotional health and more respectful relationships.

  • Clear Expectations: A predictable environment where students know how to succeed.

Support for All: A system that acknowledges positive effort through feedback and tokens while supporting diverse academic and social needs.

Social Emotional Learning

At St Joseph’s, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a core component of our approach to education. It helps students develop the skills to manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Each year begins with a focus on learning dispositions, including the Power of Yet and Growth Mindset, encouraging students to embrace challenges and view effort as a path to growth. Students also engage in explicit teaching about the Zones of Regulation, which supports them in recognising, understanding, and managing their emotions effectively.

The Respectful Relationships program further nurtures empathy, social skills, and respectful interactions with others. Weekly lessons draw on content from the Positive Behaviours for Learning framework and the Respectful Relationships program, reinforcing these social-emotional skills consistently throughout the year.

Through these initiatives, we aim to cultivate resilient, self-aware, and confident learners who are prepared to navigate both academic and personal challenges.

Student Leadership

At St Joseph’s, we believe every senior student is a leader, and that leadership is not simply a title but a responsibility to take initiative, serve others, and contribute positively to the life of our school community. Leadership is about modelling values, taking responsibility, and making a meaningful contribution to school life.

Our senior students play an important role in mentoring younger students through the Buddy Program, offering guidance, friendship, and support as they settle into school life. This helps to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported.

They also take an active role in the wider school community by leading fortnightly assemblies, developing confidence, organisation, and teamwork skills while modelling the behaviours and attitudes we value at St Joseph’s. Students have the opportunity to extend their leadership through programs such as the Marine Ambassadors, FIRE Carriers, and Junior Mayor.

In addition, each senior student undertakes a Leadership Action Project, identifying a need within the school or wider community, planning a response, and implementing meaningful change. Through these experiences, students develop skills in communication, collaboration, initiative, and problem-solving, while learning the importance of service and responsibility, empowering them to make a positive impact on those around them.

Buddies

At St Joseph’s, our Buddy Program pairs younger students with older peers to provide guidance, friendship, and support during their first two years of school. In Prep, each student is partnered with a Year 6 buddy, while in Year 1, they are supported by a Year 5 student.

Buddies help new students settle into school life, offering encouragement, companionship, and a familiar face in the playground and classroom. This program fosters positive relationships across year levels, builds confidence, and promotes a sense of belonging within our school community.

Through the Buddy Program, older students develop leadership, empathy, and mentoring skills, while younger students gain reassurance and support as they begin their learning journey at St Joseph’s. It is a cornerstone of our inclusive and caring school culture, helping all students feel valued and connected from the very start.

Lunch Time Clubs

Lunchtime clubs have become a powerful, evidence‑based strategy for improving student wellbeing, engagement, and school culture. St Joseph’s supports students during less structured parts of the day - and the impact is consistently positive. These include; wellbeing hub, gardening, choir, art and book club.
