Academic Excellence

At St Joseph’s, your child’s growth and success are at the centre of everything we do. We are committed to providing a learning environment where every student is challenged, supported, and encouraged to achieve their personal best. Our dedicated teachers work closely together to plan engaging and purposeful lessons that build deep understanding, strengthen critical thinking skills, and nurture a lifelong love of learning.

We carefully use student progress data to guide our teaching, ensuring we understand how each child is learning and where they need support or extension. By using high-impact teaching strategies, we tailor learning to meet individual needs so that every student receives the right level of challenge and assistance at the right time. Students are also actively supported to identify their next steps for learning and to set meaningful, achievable goals. Through regular feedback, reflection, and teacher guidance, they develop a clear understanding of their progress and are empowered to take ownership of their learning journey.

We believe academic excellence is built on high expectations, positive relationships, and ongoing improvement. By truly knowing each learner, we support students to grow not only academically, but also socially, emotionally and spiritually - equipping them with the skills and confidence they need for future success.

Education in Faith

Our Catholic faith permeates all that we do at St Joseph’s. We celebrate our faith through our daily interactions with one another and through regular opportunities for prayer and liturgical celebrations. Students learn that they are called to serve others within their community and to live and learn in harmony. A strong emphasis on Catholic Social Teaching helps students understand that justice is central to building peace in our world.

Throughout their primary years, children are invited to reflect on the stories and teachings of Jesus, engage in prayer, discover the beauty of God’s creation, and explore the meaning of the symbols and rituals of the Catholic Church. Students develop an understanding of Catholic teaching and its implications for their personal choices and their role within the community, learning to build just and compassionate relationships grounded in love and respect for themselves and others.

The Religious Education curriculum at St Joseph’s encourages students to recognise and respond to God’s presence in their lives. Students are supported to engage in meaningful dialogue, reflect deeply, and explore questions about the world around them. Through participation in social justice initiatives, they are encouraged to put their faith into action and demonstrate God’s love in the world.

English

At St Joseph’s Primary School, we are committed to ensuring every student achieves their full potential in English through clear, structured, and evidence-based instruction. Guided by the Science of Reading, we equip students with the essential skills required for success in both written and spoken English.

Reading

In the Junior years, systematic and explicit phonics instruction forms the foundation of literacy learning, supporting the development of phonological awareness, decoding, and accurate word recognition. Across all year levels, students engage in knowledge-rich units of learning that build understanding of the world, strengthen vocabulary, and expand background knowledge. This approach supports reading comprehension by enabling students to make meaning from texts, engage with increasingly complex ideas, and transfer their learning across a range of contexts. In the Middle and Senior years, students also participate in high-quality novel studies that further develop comprehension, critical thinking, and analytical skills, ensuring literacy learning is embedded within a rich and purposeful curriculum.

Writing

In writing, our approach follows a clear and structured progression from sentence formation to more complex compositions. Using evidence-based strategies, we explicitly teach grammar and syntax, supporting students to master sentence structure, punctuation, and word order to communicate clearly, accurately, and effectively.

Speaking and Listeing

We understand that speaking and listening are just as vital to literacy development as reading and writing. Our curriculum places a strong emphasis on these skills, providing students with regular opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions, express their ideas clearly, and listen actively to others. Through group discussions, presentations, and structured conversations, students refine their verbal communication skills, building confidence and laying a strong foundation for learning across all areas of the curriculum.

Through a consistent and coherent English program, St Joseph’s Primary School nurtures capable, confident communicators who are well equipped for lifelong learning.

Mathematics

At St Joseph’s, we are committed to developing strong mathematical understanding in every student. Our aim is to equip learners with the skills and confidence to interpret information accurately, communicate mathematical thinking clearly, and apply mathematical concepts effectively in real-world contexts. Through a robust, research-informed approach, students develop deep conceptual understanding, strong problem-solving skills, and confidence in everyday numeracy.

Mathematics is taught through an explicit and structured approach, with lessons focused on building number sense, fluency with core operations, and a clear understanding of the why behind mathematical procedures. As students progress, they explore increasingly complex concepts across the strands of Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability.

Best-practice teaching is embedded through the use of concrete materials, visual representations, and explicit instruction, supported by regular checks for understanding. Each lesson begins with a targeted daily review, reinforcing prior learning and preparing students for new concepts. As confidence and competence grow, responsibility is gradually released, enabling students to apply their learning independently.

This consistent and structured approach supports skill development, retention, and confidence, ensuring all students are supported to achieve mathematical proficiency.

Multi Tiered Systems of Support

Our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) ensure every child receives the right level of academic, social, and emotional support to succeed. This whole-school approach helps us identify student needs early, monitor progress carefully, and respond with timely, targeted support.

All students benefit from high-quality classroom teaching grounded in evidence-based, high-impact strategies. We use student data regularly to guide instruction and ensure strong learning foundations.

For children who need additional assistance, we provide targeted small-group support, and where necessary, individualised plans developed in partnership with families and specialists.

Through this structured and responsive approach, we work closely with families to ensure every child is known, supported, and able to thrive.

Science & The Humanities

Through the study of Science and the Humanities, students develop the ability to question thoughtfully, think critically, solve complex problems, communicate effectively, make informed decisions, and adapt to change. Through scientific investigation and human inquiry, they cultivate curiosity about the natural world and a rich understanding of people, cultures, and societies.

In Science, students ask questions, test ideas, analyse evidence, and draw conclusions based on careful observation and experimentation. In the Humanities, they explore history, geography, civics, and culture—examining perspectives, interpreting sources, and understanding how the past and present shape our world.

Central to our approach is a knowledge-rich curriculum that carefully sequences essential content, vocabulary, and disciplinary concepts across both Science and the Humanities. Strong foundations of knowledge enable students to reason with precision, make meaningful connections, and engage in deeper analysis. By combining explicit teaching of core knowledge with opportunities for investigation, interpretation, and application, we ensure students develop both the intellectual rigour and the transferable skills needed to thrive as informed, capable, and responsible citizens in an ever-changing world.

Health & Physical Education

At St Joseph’s, we recognise the vital role physical education and sport play in the holistic development of each child. Each week, students participate in a dedicated Physical Education lesson with a specialist teacher, focusing on gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and overall fitness. They also join a Sport session with their classroom teacher, emphasising teamwork, fair play, and the enjoyment of physical activity through a range of team games.

Throughout the year, students engage in specialist clinics run by external organisations, introducing them to new sports and skills. These clinics cover activities such as gymnastics, hockey, soccer, basketball, and rugby, providing students with the opportunity to explore a variety of physical activities in a fun and supportive environment.

Students from Prep to Year 6 also take part in our swimming program, which spans two weeks. This program helps build essential water safety skills and boosts students' confidence in the water, encouraging lifelong participation in aquatic activities.

Through our well-rounded curriculum, we aim to foster confidence, competence, and a lifelong love of movement, encouraging students to develop the physical and personal skills needed to enjoy and engage in physical activity throughout their lives.
